I played with boxee briefly when it came out and was pleased with the hard work and effort the team (massive btw) had put into it. I'm guessing it is a bigger team that built the original xbox media center player that was so massive a decade ago and worked amazingly well. This version (and they have a mac version so props there) was similar to joost but worked more from a community/social background opening up to all media. We like that.
Today i found this link over on wired regarding a way to hack your apple tv so you can run boxee on it. Wow, what a brave move and game changer i thought. Now they have gone one better allowing me to use BOTH boxee or the appletv, running (and i'm guessing here as i have not done it yet) all the stuff from the usb pendrive. :)
This changes everything. Of course they will get in trouble and it will cause lawsuits and maybe it will go back underground again but it sends a very clear message to apple and others out there. I get the impression that the team has matured now than was previous and boxee comes across with a glaze of "business" aura around it. I would be very surprised if boxee did not get bought up or bought out - to either compliment or to enhance other set-top boxes out there. Apple would have a lot to contend with someone else buys up this massive team. I would love to meet or interview them (if your reading this hook me up - i have questions!)
Admittly your working with a lot of hardcore hackers who are probably doing things low level but this often means tighter code and faster delivery - mainly due to respect for each others handywork rather than selling out for mega bucks but i get the feeling that boxee is around for the long haul and is destined to re-write the set-top world. Good on you boxee! - i've got a few suggestions and ideas if your willing to listen and jump on a plane to the uk? :)
***update*** - i had a go at the installation last night and can confirm that it works perfectly, after a few restarts and downloading of the latest version i can say that it works great on my apple tv - i think i am running v2.1 of the firmware thou, i need to check and then redo my apple tv to version 2.2 thou and test again just in case.
