So had a little surprise this morning in the post when a courier dropped of a little black box, inside the nokia e63 (which looks exactly like the e71 but plastic) with a cable, charger and the phone. a pre-production version of the phone. neat! - thank you to donna from womworld (i swear that women works harder than anyone else there!) for making this happen and sending one out to me.
So from first reactions it has been styled in the same way as the nokia e71 - not a bad thing you have to know - i quite liked that phone even if it did have a bit of the "over the top pimpage of chrome and shiny shiny backplate bring planes closer if stranded on an island" look to it. This time around we have a red dulled metallic look - i like it but it reminds me of those cheap imitation cases you can get for your old skool nokia off ebay. I still sorta like it.
The display is lovely on this thing - same as the e71 and i like the theme a bit better as it matches the colour - i know, trivial things but first reaction things all the same. After trying the keyboard i know it would be one i could get on with and use given more time. As for the phone for a replacement day to day - nope, never gonna happen the iphone for my social searching wins hands down for ease of use. As a backup phone because the battery life is probably amazing, absolutely.
Then i started to get excited because the nokia e71 had hspda (3.5g) and this low priced nokia would be a good backup phone - i would not have to spend £400 on an unlocked n85 to get that feature and you know that 2.0 megapixel camera would be enough for qik! - joy, i could have it in this stripped down version of the e71 right? - wrong. It is not on here. At all. Bummer.
The thing i do like about it, up to 18 days of standby. What? - come again, 18 DAYS? - sweet, that is almost true to the nokia form of phones from old, have they fixed the sapping screens or tweaked the symbian (getting on a bit os) operating system - nope, they added to landfill and put in a massive battery. I'm not dissing nokia here i'm just trying to work out who this phone is aimed at. Thankfully it does have wifi so you could still get some qik action on if you have a wifi signal or portable hotspot and another saving grace is a2dp stereo audio for you bluetooth handsfree people.
I'll be interested in the pricing point of this phone when it comes out for a secondary phone for just phone calls (remember those) it would be perfect for that, my current backup phone from the iphone is the n95 but it is looking very old now and due an upgrade in the form of that n85 that just got released a few days ago. Gotta get me some oled love.
I'll be updating this blog post as i use it but i wanted to get something out today seeing as the phone was officially launched today and i thought it deserved to get some press. I'll be testing bambuser on it (because the new version is supposed to be good at lower rates that hspda) and i'll let you know how i get on.
