Testing the new bambuser iphone client | os 3.0 firmware iphone3g

    July 7, 2009 7:00 PM
Joy.   I always like to test new versions of software, they spark the instant reaction for me to install them asap and boot it up in the hope that the developers have snuck in a last minute feature that i can break and them tell them what would be cool.  i'm not sure that the framerate is as good as a nokia symbian based device but it is a good backup.  i just hope that bambuser will work with the blue mikey when it arrives.  i might have to speak to them about it.   read on about a few features the new version has and what i would like to see.

    first of all - props
you have to give bambuser props for having an application that does not require jailbreaking to get working, admittly at the moment they cannot roll this out to the appstore for all to use (not sure why that is) which is a shame because this iphone 3.0 firmware version seems great.

    the settings menu
a new additional to the settings menu (at least i cannot remember seeing it before) is the high audio quality.   again, i hoping that the bambuser client will support a plugin adapter like the blue mikey (it comes tomorrow finally) so i can give those settings a good test.   the other settings high video quality, gps and private mode are pretty handle.   the private mode switch works as it should and might be a good idea to save any interviews or family only videos.

    the upload complement
as on the other version of bambuser on the nokia client you have the option on the iphone release to be able to upload a local complement.  this is basically any dropped frames (audio/video) that never managed to get sent up.   they are uploaded at the end and a new file is written with the dropped frames of audio and video.

what i would like to see
the ability to turn the camera on/off to save battery would be pretty useful and maybe a wifi/framerate indication too.  i would really like bambuser to start supporting tagging at some point and a tagcloud of previously used keywords that you can just tap on would be great.

I will try the software with the apple headphones and microphone tomorrow to see if i get better audio from holding that towards someone but ideally i need a decent mic via a connector to get a good interview.   i have never tried this with 3g yet to see if that is much improved which i am told is it.    I'm hoping that a mainstream api will be released as well as each bambuser feed currently has to get an api key that is issued from bambuser.

I do wonder if they will rejig a version for the iphone3gs as well now that it has native video recording ability and i would love to try bambuser on that new phone to see what the framerate and picture quality are like with the hardware having more power to be able to process video.  i'll update this post with some audio microphone tests tomorrow.
